Recently on social media, there have been multiple videos showing the usage of Coca-Cola to unclog drains. People have also started using Coke to clean stains off of kitchen countertops and stoves. However, we will focus on Coke’s ability to unclog drains. Is it merely a myth or is there truth behind it? Let’s find out.
What’s in Coca-Cola?
Coca-Cola is known for its phosphoric acid in its soft drinks. This gives Coke the distinct taste everyone loves during a hot summer day. The company does not release the complete ingredient list, since it is a heavily guarded secret, however, we can identify the major ingredients from their nutritional label. The ingredients are carbonated water, corn syrup, phosphoric acid, caramel colour, caffeine, and flavour. Phosphoric acid is what gives Coke the tangy flavour. It is mildly corrosive acid and can be found in the manufacture of fertilizers and detergents. But do not worry, it is not as toxic as it sounds. Phosphoric acid is actually made naturally from phosphorus, which is found in many foods. The acidity in phosphorus makes it ideal for drain cleaning. Phosphoric acid has been used in cleaning rust off metal in the construction industry. However, phosphoric acid’s concentration in Coke is too mild for it to be harmful for consumption but it is still effective as a drain cleaner.
Will Coca-Cola Be Effective?
Regular drain cleaners, use sodium hydroxide to increase the effectiveness to dissolve the clogs. Professional plumbers use sulfuric acid, which is stronger than sodium hydroxide to solve stubborn clogs. The phosphoric acid in the Coke does the same thing sulfuric acid does but much slower. Since it is a weaker acid, with a much smaller concentration, you will have to leave it in for much longer than a regular cleaner. But to answer the question about its effectiveness; it will 100% be effective just like your regular cleaner, just slower.
How to Use Cola to Unclog
In order to use the Coke effectively, you have to ensure your drain is completely clogged. If it is partially clogged, the Coke will pass right through the drain without any effect. Coke needs time to work its magic, therefore, it is only effective when the drain is fully clogged.
If you believe your drain is completely clogged, grab a 2-litre bottle of Coca-Cola, and pour it down the drain. Make sure the Coke does not instantly go down the drain and let the Coke sit in your drain overnight. In the morning, if it has been unclogged and all the Coke has gone down, flush it down with hot water.
Alternative Methods
Like Cola, there are other household items you can use to fix your clogged drain. The use of baking soda and vinegar is extremely recommended by many plumbers. If you like to go with the environmentally friendly route, baking soda and vinegar are the way. Pour 1 cup of baking soda and then pour vinegar over the top of it. Once you see the formation of foam, let it sit for 15-20 min. Then, pour boiling water to rinse the mixture. Repeat the process as necessary.
