How to Fix a Clogged Sink Drain

Sometimes the unexpected happens and you need a quick fixture

These are some options you can do to fix a clogged sink drain:

Bring the plunger

For this option: you will need a plunger and gloves

To successfully use the plunger:

  • Remove any sink strainers/stoppers
  • Run some water if there isn’t any already in the sink to cover about 2 inches of the plunger
  • If you have a double sink, plug the other drain so nothing comes out of there.
  • Put the plunger on top of the sink drain and keep pushing
  • If the plunger gets easier to push, take it out and if the water drains you fixed it!

If the plunger doesn’t unclog your drain it’s okay – go to step 2

Baking soda and vinegar!

For this option: you will need boiling water, baking soda, and vinegar

  • Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain
  • Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain
  • Wait 5 minutes
  • Add one cup of white vinegar down the drain

→ the chemical reaction of vinegar and baking soda will break down the items in the pipe

  • Wait 10 mins
  • Add a pot of boiling water down the drain
  • Run water in your sink for about 5 minutes to make sure you fixed the clogged drain

Use a drain auger (snake)

For this option: you will need to use a drain auger –  It can be purchased for about $30-40 from any department or hardware store – a wide bucket/bowl, towels, and gloves

  • Put the cable of the auger down the drain, keep lengthening it until you feel resistance – meaning that you might have found what’s causing the clog
  • Start turning the auger backward to bring it back up the drain – you should be sensing different levels of force
  • If you don’t reach anything that means what’s causing the clog is further down your drain

Fix your clogged sink drain with the use of a drain auger!

To investigate that:

  • Put towels under your sink pipes
  • Put a wide bucker/bowl on the towels
  • Unscrew the pipes
  • Insert the drain auger and try again
  • Screw the pipes back together
  • Run water for a few minutes to test the drain

It’s important to maintain a clean drain to avoid such problems. If you’re still struggling to fix your clogged drain, give us a call at 416-519-7644 and one of our certified plumbers will assist you!
